Meet your new dedicated medical school librarian

Published on

Meet your new dedicated medical school librarian. You can find a list of the services that she can provide here on the Health Sciences Library website.

Name: Rachel Blume

Role: Medicine and Research Services Librarian, Health Sciences Library in Seattle.

How will students find you? I will be working a hybrid schedule available online at rblume@uw.edu as well as in my office twice a week in the health sciences library. I’m happy to help anyone throughout WWAMI.

Where are you from? I am a Pacific Northwest native having grown up in Sequim, WA backed up against the Olympic National Park but I’ve spent time living in Utah, Texas, and Oregon.
What did you do most recently? I was the Health Sciences Librarian at Baylor University.

Why did you become a librarian? I became a librarian because of the uniqueness of the whole idea of libraries as this place for free access to information – but I stayed because of the experience of helping students succeed.

What interests you about helping medical students? My interest in helping students is really about student success. As a first generation student from an underrepresented group, an education changed my life. I like having even a small part in helping do that for others.

What do you look up in the library for yourself? It depends on what kind of library I am in, but at the public library I am a pretty avid reader and enjoy a lot of fantasy as well as the classics like Pride and Prejudice or The Hobbit.

What would you be if you were not a librarian? I would be probably a veterinarian or do something related to the water, like marine biology. Anything to be by the ocean!
