Updated guidance about social media accounts

Published on

  To the UW Medicine Community:
Recently, there has been an increase in posts about world and political events on email and social media platforms. At UW Medicine, we recognize the importance of civic engagement and the right to freely express one’s views on any subject through social media, opinion editorials, lobbying and peaceful demonstrations. As part of our commitments, these activities need to be conducted in accordance with UW Medicine policies.

When expressing personal views on a social media site that lists your affiliation with UW Medicine, such as LinkedIn, TikTok, Facebook, X (formerly called Twitter) and Instagram, you must clearly indicate that these opinions are your own and not representative of UW Medicine. Do this by adding a disclaimer to your posts: These opinions are my own and do not represent the positions of UW Medicine. Additionally, please familiarize yourself with and adhere to UW Medicine’s Social Media Compliance Policy & Guidance.

UW Medicine resources, including email and UW Medicine social media platforms, should only be used for work-related purposes. Additionally, employees may not use UW Medicine resources including computers, internet access and emails for lobbying. Please familiarize yourself with and adhere to UW Administrative Policy Statement 47.2 (Personal Use of UW Facilities, Computers, and Equipment by UW Employees) and Federal Lobbying Disclosure – Federal Relations (washington.edu).

Likewise, opinion editorials that include an individual’s UW Medicine affiliation should include the following disclaimer: Views represented here are the author’s own and not necessarily those of UW Medicine.

We encourage the vibrant exchange of ideas and discussions within our community, and support personal opinions and positions being shared. By following the compliance policies and guidance, we contribute to a positive, inclusive and respectful environment that reflects the values of UW Medicine.
Sincerely,

Margaret M. Peyton
