Cultivating a Beloved Community Mindset to Transform Unjust Systems

Published on

“Cultivating a Beloved Community Mindset to Transform Unjust Systems.” That’s the title of a vibrant new website from the UW Medicine Office of Healthcare Equity and UW Health Sciences that honors the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and celebrates community and people who serve those in need.

You’ll find music, photographs, quotes and other sources of inspiration on the site. Each of the UW Health Sciences schools honors someone who is serving others. This year, UWSOM honors Jason Deen, M.D. (Blackfeet), left, a pediatric cardiologist, pediatrician and director of UWSOM Indian Health Pathway. You can read more about Dr. Deen and the other Community Service Award winners here.

Events: Please check events listings in your area for ceremonies and other activities. We received word of two events in Seattle, one outside A-300 in the Health Sciences Building:

Health Sciences Celebration: There will be a two-hour Martin Luther King Jr. tribute event in the lobby of Warren G. Magnuson Health Sciences Building Lobby on Thursday, Jan. 19, from 2 to 4 p.m. P.T. At 2:30 p.m. there will be remarks by Paula Houston, chief equity officer, UW Medicine and associate vice president for Medical Affairs, as well as presentations of awards. More information here.

Seattle rally: In Seattle, you are invited to join the Department of Medicine (DoM) Diversity Council at the MLK Rally and March on Monday, Jan. 16. The rally, coordinated by the Seattle MLK Organizing Coalition, begins at 11 a.m. at the Garfield High School gym. The march begins at 12:30 p.m. in the main parking lot. DoM participants will meet at the bottom of the stairs in front of Garfield High School at 12:15 p.m. for the march. If you’re interested in joining, reach out to Sean Greenlee to receive additional day-of meetup contact information. Visit the event website to view additional event details and activities. If you know of other activities that students are participating in throughout WWAMI, tell us and we can add the information to the individual class newsletters (those are published on WordPress and thus can be updated anytime). You can also review event listings for the University of Wyoming, University of Alaska, Anchorage, Montana State University and University of Idaho.
