The following is a statement from Heather McPhillips, M.D., M.P.H., associate dean for Curriculum:

I am pleased to announce that Sarah Galinato Gerrish, M.D., has accepted the position as Director for Curriculum Equity. She will start in this position on May 1, 2023.

Dr. Gerrish is a full-spectrum family physician whose passion lies in health care justice through community engagement and empowerment through identity equity and education. Dr. Gerrish took the position at the University of Washington School of Medicine to further the mission of inclusive, representative, and anti-biased medical education.

She is faculty at Full Circle Health Family Medicine Residency of Idaho Boise program, where she is the JEDI chair, and also serves as the Kuna clinic medical director, continuing the clinical mission to change health disparities in meaningful and progressive ways. Dr. Gerrish has published and presented topics surrounding healthcare justice, equity, diversity and inclusion in local, regional, and national venues. Communities that further her education in advocacy, antiracist policies and allyship are her priority along with her vision for health equity in all medical spaces.

She enjoys mentoring early career physicians, especially those with diverse identities. Living and traveling internationally has given her a special interest in care of those with refugee status, child and maternal health including obstetrics, and social and global health advocacy. During medical school at the University of Washington, she had an emphasis in global and underserved health care and now advocates for inclusive language and cultural humility in all settings.

Dr. Gerrish has a B.S. in Cell and Molecular Biology and a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Fine Art and Photography from the University of Washington and strongly believes that non-binary thinking and creative problem solving are key to equitable systems.

Born and raised in Idaho, she Ioves everything about the outdoors especially trail running, climbing and skiing. Being a physician mom to two sports-forward hilarious humans, she understands the importance of mentorship and changing gender bias within healthcare. As a partner to an innovative clinical health psychologist, she understands the importance of rest, balance, wellness, and radical transparency.

Please join me in welcoming Dr. Gerrish to our medical student program WWAMILY.
