This course fulfills UWSOM\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/education.uwmedicine.org\/curriculum\/medical-student-scholarship\/\">Independent Investigative Inquiry<\/a> requirement.<\/p>\n<p>There are three curricular track options to choose from that will fulfill the III requirement. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"js-accordion__header\">What are the three track options?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"js-accordion__panel\" >\n<p><span data-teams=\"true\"><strong> Intervention Analysis<\/strong> asks students to analyze a health system challenge in their RUOP community and propose a solution through a mock proposal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Health Education<\/strong> requires working alongside a community partner to develop and distribute accessible health education materials for patents or wider community.<\/p>\n<p>We also offer a\u00a0<strong>Hybrid RUOP\/Discovery <\/strong>option that is regionally dependent. This track allows students to combine research and the summer immersive clinical rotation together. Students pursuing this track begin working on a <em><strong>preapproved <\/strong><\/em>research project during the spring and commit to a four-week clinical rotation during the summer that builds upon their research project.<\/p>\n<p>Before applying for a Hybrid Research\/RUOP placement, students should be aware of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Students will need to apply to both the RUOP &amp; Research (Discovery) programs by January 4th and indicate their program preference<\/li>\n<li>The RUOP clinical rotation is comparable to traditional RUOP tracks; site assignment is not guaranteed and lasts for four <u>consecutive<\/u> weeks. All students should expect to spend 30-35 hours per week in clinic.<\/li>\n<li>Students will need to connect with Toby Keys ( <a href=\"mailto:keyst@uw.edu\">keyst@uw.edu<\/a> ) to confirm their identified project meets RUOP criteria for <em>community medicine in primary care settings\u00a0<\/em>before participation can be confirmed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These offerings can change from year to year and space can be limited.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"js-accordion__header\">Can students do RUOP without the III portion?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"js-accordion__panel\" >\n<p>No.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"js-accordion__header\">When can I do my RUOP?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"js-accordion__panel\" >\n<p>RUOP rotations begin:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Earliest Start Date: June 28, 2027<\/li>\n<li>Latest Start Date: July 26, 2027<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Please remember the clinical rotation for RUOP is <strong>4- continuous weeks<\/strong>. Most students will be notified about their dates by mid-April (depending on region). RUOP rotations scheduled during the summer break week require advance permission from the RUOP Office, the site, and the student who will be impacted.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"js-accordion__header\">Does my RUOP have to be four continuous weeks?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"js-accordion__panel\" >\n<p>Yes. Any extenuating circumstances that would prevent this would require advance permission from the Regional Clinical Dean, the RUOP Office, and the site.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"js-accordion__header\">How can I learn more about anything related to RUOP?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"js-accordion__panel\" >\n<p>We highly encourage you to attend an Info Session in the Fall of your first year in medical school, connect with your colleagues who have gone through the program, and reach out to your Lead Research Advisors for guidance. For more information contact <a href=\"mailto:somrural@uw.edu\">somrural@uw.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"js-accordion__header\">Does RUOP meet other program requirements?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"js-accordion__panel\" >\n<p>Yes, it fulfills the program requirement for TRUST and may fulfill program requirements for the <a href=\"https:\/\/education.uwmedicine.org\/student-affairs\/groups\/pathways-program-2\/\">Pathways Program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"js-accordion__header\">What if I need to remediate blocks or threads - can I still participate in RUOP?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"js-accordion__panel\" >\n<p>Students who need to remediate more than one thread will need to switch a modified RUOP III, which removes the clinical experience to prioritize ability to complete the academic requirements of your didactic work and the RUOP III.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><script src=\"https:\/\/education.uwmedicine.org\/somrural\/wp-content\/themes\/uw-2014-master\/js\/uw.accordionmodule.js\" type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script><\/p>\n<div id=\"uw-accordion-shortcode\">\n<h3>Application<\/h3>\n<div class=\"js-accordion\" data-accordion-prefix-classes=\"uw-accordion-shortcode\">\n<h2 class=\"js-accordion__header\">How do I apply?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"js-accordion__panel\" >\n<p>To apply to the program you will need to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/education.uwmedicine.org\/somrural\/programs\/ruop\/apply-to-ruop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">complete the online application<\/a>. The online links will be available from December &#8211; early January.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"js-accordion__header\">What if I need to update my application after it is submitted?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"js-accordion__panel\" >\n<p>At time of submission, we <strong>strongly<\/strong> encourage you to Save My Response to your Microsoft Forms account. This will allow you to make edits in the future. If you do not take this extra step, we are unable to assist you with edits. Depending on the severity of the edits, you may be required to submit a new application. For this reason, please save your responses before closing your application window.<\/p>\n<p>Remember that we do not process applications on a first-come, first-served basis. Please take your time to ensure the application is complete and accurate.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"js-accordion__header\">Will I be able to block out some dates that I cannot participate in RUOP?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"js-accordion__panel\" >\n<p>Yes, <em>however<\/em>, please keep in mind that site placements are determined based on student availability. If you are unable to begin your RUOP rotation between the dates of June 28 &#8211; July 26, 2027, perhaps another Triple I program would be better suited for your schedule. Remember, a clinical rotation is 4 continuous weeks. For example, if a rotation begins July 26, 2027 it ends on August 20, 2027.<\/p>\n<p>All students who agree to participate in the program must be available to do their rotation once assigned.<\/p>\n<p>Please contact somrural@uw.edu if special circumstances are at play (e.g., your wedding, military commitment, etc.).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"js-accordion__header\">What is the last day I can commit to RUOP?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"js-accordion__panel\" >\n<p>The commitment date is <strong>January 15, 2027<\/strong>. Students will be informed of their regional\/state placement prior to this date but will not know the specifics of where they are going when they are asked to commit to the program.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"js-accordion__header\">Can I drop from RUOP once I commit to the program?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"js-accordion__panel\" >\n<p>No. Each community placement takes RUOP and our partners several months of planning. After committing to RUOP, only under extenuating circumstances, will you be allowed to drop from the program. Learning about other summer opportunities or disappointment over your community placement will not be an acceptable reason for a late drop.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"js-accordion__header\">Do I still need to commit by January 15th if I am waiting on a non-UW (or GHIP) program placement?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"js-accordion__panel\" >\n<p>We understand that some students may be deciding between RUOP and other competitive opportunities (like research fellowships or GHIP) with later notification dates. If that is the case, we ask you <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">decline<\/span> RUOP participation by the stated deadline. If your plans change after January 15th, you may email <a href=\"mailto:somrural@uw.edu\">somrural@uw.edu<\/a> before March 15, 2027 to request secondary placement consideration. Please be aware of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Placements are not guaranteed and are based entirely on site availability<\/li>\n<li>This option is intended for students who applied during the standard application window<\/li>\n<li>Late placements require significant flexibility, as we may be unable to accommodate specific location, clinical interest, or patient population requests<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We cannot accept any secondary placement requests after March 15, 2027.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"js-accordion__header\">Do TRUST students need to apply?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"js-accordion__panel\" >\n<p>Yes. The same timeline applies to TRUST students. TRUST students submit an abbreviated application.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"js-accordion__header\">What if I need special accommodations?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"js-accordion__panel\" >\n<p>If you are a student who has, or think you may need, DRS accommodations <strong>for the clinical or housing environments<\/strong> of RUOP, you must reach out to Disability Resources for Students (<a href=\"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/uwdrs\/\">UW Disability Resources for Students<\/a>) within two weeks of applying to RUOP (or by the deadline of Jan. 8, 2027). Please contact Eric Trekell, Senior Access Coordinator at <a href=\"mailto:ericwt@uw.edu\">ericwt@uw.edu<\/a> to schedule an appointment to discuss your needs. If you choose to not disclose information about your disability\/specific needs by the deadline, we cannot guarantee your accommodations will be considered or implemented during the placement process, which could result in you being unable to participate in RUOP.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><script src=\"https:\/\/education.uwmedicine.org\/somrural\/wp-content\/themes\/uw-2014-master\/js\/uw.accordionmodule.js\" type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script><\/p>\n<div id=\"uw-accordion-shortcode\">\n<h3>Placements<\/h3>\n<div class=\"js-accordion\" data-accordion-prefix-classes=\"uw-accordion-shortcode\">\n<h2 class=\"js-accordion__header\">How are placements made?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"js-accordion__panel\" >\n<p>There are two steps to determining student placement:<\/p>\n<p>On the application form, you will rank a list of six geographic WWAMI regions in order of preference. Based on regional capacity and your preferences, the RUOP office will assign you to one of the six WWAMI regions.<\/p>\n<p>After you have been assigned to a region, your application will be forwarded to the appropriate Placement Coordinator for that region. The Placement Coordinator will review your application and consider your interests. Coordinators will then determine appropriate placement based on their preceptor availability for their region.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"js-accordion__header\">Who are the RUOP Placement Coordinators?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"js-accordion__panel\" >\n<p>These are our regional partners who help with coordinating your placement in one of the six WWAMI regions (Eastern and Western Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, Idaho). Your Placement Coordinator will inform you of your placement and discuss transportation and housing issues with you.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"js-accordion__header\">Do I get site preference if I am enrolled in a pathway?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"js-accordion__panel\" >\n<p>Pathways may give credit to students participating in the RUOP III program. RUOP attempts to place Pathway students in communities that allow them opportunities to further explore their areas of interest. However, due to site availability and\/or other logistical considerations, this is not always possible. In these events, all Pathway programs have contingency assignments. Please check with your individual <a href=\"https:\/\/education.uwmedicine.org\/student-affairs\/groups\/pathways-program-2\/\">pathway program<\/a> for details.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"js-accordion__header\">Do students get preferential placement in their Foundations campus region?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"js-accordion__panel\" >\n<p>Yes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"js-accordion__header\">Can I switch sites with a student or negotiate a different placement?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"js-accordion__panel\" >\n<p>No.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"js-accordion__header\">What happens if I don't get placed in my preferred community?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"js-accordion__panel\" >\n<p>RUOP will do their best to place you in that specific community, but <em><strong>we cannot guarantee a placement<\/strong><\/em>. We encourage students to keep their expectations open and adopt a flexible attitude when it comes to site placements.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"js-accordion__header\">If I'm not from University of Alaska campus, do I have a good chance of being assigned there?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"js-accordion__panel\" >\n<p>It is unlikely. Unless you have strong ties to the region, it is best if you do not rank Alaska first on your application. It is also unlikely for Alaska students to be placed in other regions without similar strong ties. This is primarily because of the high costs associated with travel and housing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><script src=\"https:\/\/education.uwmedicine.org\/somrural\/wp-content\/themes\/uw-2014-master\/js\/uw.accordionmodule.js\" type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script><\/p>\n<div id=\"uw-accordion-shortcode\">\n<h3>RUOP Sites<\/h3>\n<div class=\"js-accordion\" data-accordion-prefix-classes=\"uw-accordion-shortcode\">\n<h2 class=\"js-accordion__header\">Where are the RUOP sites?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"js-accordion__panel\" >\n<p>RUOP sites are rural and urban under-resourced communities in any of the five WWAMI states: Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"js-accordion__header\">Is there a list of RUOP sites?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"js-accordion__panel\" >\n<p>No. Each year we recruit volunteer preceptors. Therefore, we do not know the participating sites until late spring.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"js-accordion__header\">What if I want to work with a specific preceptor?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"js-accordion__panel\" >\n<p>Please include that preceptor&#8217;s contact information (Name, email, phone, clinic name, etc.) in your application and explain your rationale. RUOP sites must meet certain requirements in order to be eligible for a rotation so a Placement Coordinator will reach out to the preceptor if they feel like the site meets program requirements. Please <strong>do not attempt to arrange your own rotation<\/strong> or reach out to previous RUOP sites to arrange your own rotation. RUOP sites are built on relationships and back-channel communication can confuse and frustrate our partners.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<section id=\"content\" role=\"main\">\n<article id=\"post-5374\">\n<section>\n<div>\n<div id=\"toggle-do-i-need-a-car-if-im-going-to-a-rural-community\">\n<p><script src=\"https:\/\/education.uwmedicine.org\/somrural\/wp-content\/themes\/uw-2014-master\/js\/uw.accordionmodule.js\" type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script><\/p>\n<div id=\"uw-accordion-shortcode\">\n<h3>Housing<\/h3>\n<div class=\"js-accordion\" data-accordion-prefix-classes=\"uw-accordion-shortcode\">\n<h2 class=\"js-accordion__header\">What type of housing is provided in RUOP?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"js-accordion__panel\" >\n<p>Housing is provided for students who will be placed in rural locations or students who will be traveling outside of their Foundations region. Housing can include, but not limited to <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW4866765 BCX8\">living with a community host, clinic-provided shared apartments, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW4866765 BCX8\">living with your preceptor. In some situations, an Air BNB or hotel may be secured, however, please keep in mind that this is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">not<\/span> the preferred method of housing. <\/span>We ask students to be flexible and prepared for various types of housing arrangements including shared housing or homestays.<\/p>\n<p>TRUST students will stay in the same housing that was available to you for your prior site visits\/experiences.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"js-accordion__header\">When would housing not be provided?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"js-accordion__panel\" >\n<p>RUOP does not provide housing to students placed in the same city as their Foundations site (i.e., Seattle students placed in Seattle; Spokane students placed in Spokane, Bozeman students placed in Bozeman).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"js-accordion__header\">Do I need to find my own housing?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"js-accordion__panel\" >\n<p>If indicated on your application, RUOP and regional partners will work to provide housing for you during the RUOP experience, at no additional cost to you. However, if you decline the identified housing, RUOP will not cover the cost of any alternative housing option.<\/p>\n<p>If you have family or other donated housing you can take advantage of during the RUOP experience, please mention that on the RUOP application. Please be aware, that you may be assigned a site based on this information, so take some time to consider if residing at this location during your RUOP rotation is truly feasible for you.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"js-accordion__header\">Can I bring a family member?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"js-accordion__panel\" >\n<p>Please know that we cannot guarantee housing for family members as this is dependent upon what community housing is available. Whether or not donated accommodations for accompanying family are secured, RUOP is unable to provide reimbursement for any costs related to family accommodations and\/or travel.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"js-accordion__header\">Will I have internet in my housing?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"js-accordion__panel\" >\n<p>We do our best to find housing with internet, but in some cases there will not be internet in your home. We ask students to be flexible and seek out creative solutions.\u00a0 We also expect students to let us know if their assignments will be delayed due to connectivity issues. In these situations, please remember that there is likely internet connectivity issues for other folks in the community beyond yourself, and that this may give insight into the challenges that community members face.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"js-accordion__header\">What if I have allergies or need other special housing accommodations?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"js-accordion__panel\" >\n<p>RUOP will make every effort to accommodate students. Students will have the opportunity to describe any housing needs on their application.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"js-accordion__header\">Can I stay with friends or family during my RUOP?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"js-accordion__panel\" >\n<p>Yes! Please indicate on your application places you can stay during your RUOP. But remember, you may be assigned a site based on what you include, so take some time to consider whether this truly is a reasonable housing option for you (and your friends\/family).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"js-accordion__header\">Can I bring my cat or dog?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"js-accordion__panel\" >\n<p><strong>Pets are not allowed<\/strong> to accompany you on your RUOP. Please remember that much of the housing we are able to find in our communities are shared housing, including hospital apartments. While you may enjoy your pet, the next person may have a severe allergy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"js-accordion__header\">Who is responsible for housing damages?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"js-accordion__panel\" >\n<p>Students are responsible for any damages beyond the normal wear and tear to their housing arrangement. Students should leave their housing clean and similar to how they found it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"js-accordion__header\">Who notifies me about my housing?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"js-accordion__panel\" >\n<p>The Placement Coordinator in the region you are assigned will contact you with this information in advance of your rotation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"js-accordion__header\">What if I don't like the housing option offered to me?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"js-accordion__panel\" >\n<p>Students are welcome to decline viable housing offered by RUOP. However, alternative housing will be at the student&#8217;s own expense.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"js-accordion__header\">What should I do if I have an issue with my housing once I am onsite?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"js-accordion__panel\" >\n<p>Contact your Regional Placement Coordinator.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/article>\n<\/section>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><script src=\"https:\/\/education.uwmedicine.org\/somrural\/wp-content\/themes\/uw-2014-master\/js\/uw.accordionmodule.js\" type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script><\/p>\n<div id=\"uw-accordion-shortcode\">\n<h3>Transportation<\/h3>\n<div class=\"js-accordion\" data-accordion-prefix-classes=\"uw-accordion-shortcode\">\n<h2 class=\"js-accordion__header\">Does RUOP provide transportation?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"js-accordion__panel\" >\n<p>A single, round-trip mileage stipend is provided to students who must travel 40+ miles or 40+ minutes <strong>one-way<\/strong> from their Foundations campus to their RUOP site.\u200b This stipend does not apply for students who are traveling to local site placements (&lt; 40 miles).\u200b<\/p>\n<p>The program does not pay for any other travel during the RUOP rotation, including daily commuting.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"js-accordion__header\">Do I need a car if I am going to a rural community?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"js-accordion__panel\" >\n<p>Rural placements frequently work best with a car. Placements in Alaska are an exception to this rule.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"js-accordion__header\">Will RUOP pay for a rental car?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"js-accordion__panel\" >\n<p>No.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"js-accordion__header\">What should I do if my transportation changes between January - June?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"js-accordion__panel\" >\n<p>Please reach out to your Regional Placement Coordinator as soon as a significant change to your transportation occurs. When they have timely notice, they can adapt site placement as needed.
