Prospective Students

Apply for financial aid

Financial Aid is a combination of loans, scholarships, and grants. Most UWSOM medical students take out loans at some point during their time in medical school. To view detailed information about types of financial aid, go to Debt Management and Loan Resources

To receive financial aid, you must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) annually. The UW’s priority deadline has been extended to February 28th for 2024-2025 school year. You should submit your FAFSA by the priority deadline, even if you have not been admitted yet.

Washington DACA students need to submit a WASFA instead of a FAFSA because they are not eligible for federal aid.

University of Washington’s FAFSA code is 003798

As a medical student, you only need to include your information on the FAFSA.  Parent information is no longer collected on the FAFSA starting with the 2024-2025 school year. We will notify you via email in the springtime about how to get this information to us for SOM scholarship consideration.

If you miss the priority deadline, your award may be processed late. If you are a Washington student and you miss the priority deadline, you are not considered for state grant funds. If you have extenuating circumstances for your late FAFSA, you may submit a Priority Appeal. The appeal form is listed on the Forms website under “Graduate Students.”

Financial Aid at UWSOM

SOM Financial Aid

The SOM Financial Aid office is in the Health Sciences Building on the fifth floor in the T-Wing (T-557). There are three staff members who serve as liaisons for medical students to the main UW Office of Student Financial Aid (OSFA). Prospective students should email somfao@uw.edu with questions.

Email somfao@uw.edu

You may also contact OSFA with questions, however, be sure to identify yourself as a medical student. Medical student budgets are nuanced, which is why we recommend contacting SOM Financial Aid first.

General Overview

All UWSOM medical students receive their financial aid from the University of Washington, regardless of what university they attend for the Foundations phase. Your financial aid budget will cover tuition, living expenses, books, and required fees. The budget, except for tuition, is usually finalized in February. Tuition is finalized in the summer. To see the current year’s budget, go to Cost of Attendance.

The University of Washington is on the quarter system, which means all students receive financial aid direct deposits four times a year. To find the current year’s direct deposit dates, go to Timelines.

For information about SOM Scholarships, go to Scholarships.

Tuition

Tuition is set during the summer before the next academic year. You can view the current year’s tuition rates on the Graduate Tuition Dashboard.

  • Campus: Seattle Campus (for all MD students)
  • Student Level: Professional
  • Graduate Program: Medicine (MD) – All Years

If you prefer to view tuition rates on a PDF, you can see them broken down annually and quarterly (Washington Student Only).

Washington (Seattle + Spokane) students pay tuition to the University of Washington during both the Foundations and the Clinical phases. It is automatically deducted from your financial aid disbursement. Your direct deposit will only contain your aid for living expenses.

State Grants:

There are state grants available to Washington residents of a variable amount for each year of medical school. Students must be receiving financial aidhave submitted a FAFSA on time, and demonstrate financial need to be eligible for the grant and will automatically be considered when awards are processed. The amount changes each year but in previous years, it has been approximately $4500.

Foundations:

During the Foundations phase, Wyoming students pay tuition directly to your regional campuses (UWY). You will receive the financial aid to pay tuition in your direct deposits. You will receive four direct deposits annually and the timing of those deposits matches UW’s quarter system timeline (even though UWY is on the semester system). Contract Fee:

Wyoming students pay tuition to Wyoming the first year of their foundations, and then a Wyoming contract fee the following three years. If you do not return to Wyoming after residency, you will have to pay the state back for subsidizing your medical education. SOM Financial Aid is not involved in determining this fee. For more information, visit this webpage.

During the Foundations phase, Alaska students pay tuition directly to your regional campuses (UAK). You will receive the financial aid to pay tuition in your direct deposits. You will receive four direct deposits annually and the timing of those deposits matches UW’s quarter system timeline (even though UAK is on the semester system). Payback Requirements:

The state of Alaska approves funding annually for the WWAMI program to subsidize your tuition during medical school. In exchange for paying this lower cost of tuition, the state of Alaska has payback requirements. SOM Financial Aid is not involved in this process. For more information, visit this website.

During the Foundations phase, Montana students pay tuition directly to your regional campuses (MSU). You will receive the financial aid to pay tuition in your direct deposits. You will receive four direct deposits annually and the timing of those deposits matches UW’s quarter system timeline (even though MSU is on the semester system). MRPIP Fee:

The state of Montana requires all WWAMI medical students to pay a Montana Rural Physician’s Incentive Program (MRPIP) fee for four years. There are two different amounts of the MRPIP fee. If you sign the contract and commit to returning to Montana after residency, you pay a lower fee. If you do not sign the contract, you pay a higher fee. Whichever option you choose, that fee amount is added to your budget, so you will receive financial aid to pay for it. SOM Financial Aid is not involved in determining this fee. For more information, visit this webpage.

During the Foundations phase, Idaho students pay tuition directly to your regional campuses (UID). You will receive the financial aid to pay tuition in your direct deposits. You will receive four direct deposits annually and the timing of those deposits matches UW’s quarter system timeline (even though UID is on the semester system). RPIP Fee:

The state of Idaho requires all WWAMI medical students to pay a Rural Physician’s Incentive Program (RPIP) fee for four years. This fee is added to your budget, so you will receive financial aid to pay for it. SOM Financial Aid is not involved in determining this fee. For more information, visit this webpage.

If you are an out-of-region student (i.e. not from a WWMAI state), you may apply for residency status in Washington state after demonstrating a year of primary residency in Washington. If residency status is not granted, you will continue to pay non-resident tuition.

Gaining residency status is not assured and generally requires proving that a student did not move to Washington purely for the purposes of education.
