Messages from Dr. Allen regarding clinical training for MS3 and MS4 students

Dear MS3 class,

I write to you today to share updated information regarding spring quarter.

The School has made the difficult decision that students will not return to clinical training until summer quarter (beginning June 29, 2020).  This decision was made in consultation with UW Medicine leaders and medical schools across the country and was not made lightly. We continue to base our decisions on prioritizing the safety of our students, the safety of faculty and staff, the care and safety of patients, and providing students with the education they need to graduate and go on to be excellent physicians.

For spring quarter, there will be a number of online courses available for you to take that will count toward your graduation requirements. For March 30 – April 24 we are offering the Pandemic and Health Systems Response course.  Next week, a list of 2-week and 4-week online elective courses will be made available for registration for the period of April 27 – June 19.

The Faculty Council on Academic Affairs has approved reducing your graduation requirement to one advanced patient care rotation (instead of two) and only four months electives – two of which will be clinical electives and two of which can be either clinical or non-clinical electives.

I know you will be concerned about completing rotations in the specialty in which you are planning to apply to residency.  We are working with the departments and clerkship directors to help ensure we have the rotations you need for a successful residency application.

We know that many of you have special circumstances, such as MD/PhD, OMS/MD, Track, TRUST, WRITE, Olympia LIC, Pathways, concurrent degrees, military and others, and are working on how these will be effected by the changes.

I know you will have questions about these changes.  We are planning a webinar for Monday, March 30 at 1 pm Alaska/2 pm PDT/3 pm MDT.  The webinar format allows for more participants.  Please submit questions for the webinar through catalyst: https://catalyst.uw.edu/webq/survey/esom/387421.  The webinar information is below; it will be recorded and made available for viewing later.

Please take care of yourselves –

Suzanne Allen, MD, MPH
Vice Dean for Academic, Rural and Regional Affairs
