UW Medicine requires booster shots

The UW Health Sciences Immunization Program (HSIP) emailed students with an important update regarding COVID-19 booster vaccines.  An increasing number of practicum sites, including UW Medicine facilities, are requiring proof of COVID-19 boosters.  In the likelihood that HSIP students will be required to meet practicum site COVID-19 booster requirements to participate in most health care settings, HSIP is requesting that all HSIP students upload their COVID-19 booster vaccination as soon as possible in their CastleBranch account.  This will assist in validating COVID-19 booster vaccinations to practicum sites and avoid practicum sites declining student participation.

Students who participate in practicums at a UW Medicine facility are required to receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot by Friday, March 4, 2022.  Students participating in practicums at a UWMC facility will not be allowed to continue their rotation unless a booster dose has been uploaded and approved in their CastleBranch account by this date unless they are not yet eligible for the booster (see eligibility chart below).  Students are required to get a booster within 10 days following their date of eligibility.

COVID-19 BOOSTER ELIGIBILITY (Refer to the CDC COVID vaccine and booster website for more information):

If you are not attending a practicum site that requires COVID-19 booster vaccinations, we still strongly encourage you to receive and upload documentation of a booster dose as soon as possible.  If or when COVID-19 booster vaccines become an HSIP requirement in the future (e.g., if CDC requires them for health care workers), students in HSIP-participating schools/programs will be notified.  At that time, anyone who has not already submitted a COVID-19 booster dose to their CastleBranch account would be required to do so.

The “To Do” action to upload your COVID-19 booster vaccination will be available in your CastleBranch account between February 12 – 18, 2022.  Your submission must include your full name, type of vaccine (Manufacturer), full date of administration, and come from a verifiable source.

Please contact HSIP at myshots@uw.edu for any additional questions.

How to get booster shots:

Medical students are eligible to receive Moderna, Pfizer and Johnson and Johnson booster shots through UW Medicine.

Students who are in Seattle can call 844.520.8700 to be added to a waitlist. Please note, it may take up to a week for you to receive a call to schedule your booster.

Students can choose which vaccine they would like or default to their previous vaccine type. Those who received Pfizer or Moderna should stick with the same vaccine, but if you previously received the Johnson & Johnson, you may want to consider getting one of the mRNA vaccines given that early studies demonstrated significantly enhanced antibody levels with mRNA, and a (rare) potential risk of venous thrombosis with J&J.
